![[ ]](http://s1.images.proboards.com/off.gif) | Amsterdam, Netherlands (11 sub-boards) Even though neither the Dutch government nor the head of state resides in Amsterdam, the city is the capital of the Netherlands. The largest and most important city in the Netherlands is also the country's biggest tourist-draw with about 3.5 million tourists visiting this historic city each year. Much of Amsterdam's biggest attractions date from the city's heyday during the seventeenth century when it was a financial and political powerhouse. Most of the cities' famous canals and harmonious architecture stems from this era. Moderator: Rayne Misericordia | 2 | 48 | on Dec 23, 2008, 12:23am by Darin Astennu in Crossroads (Darin) |
![[ ]](http://s1.images.proboards.com/off.gif) | Berlin, Germany (11 sub-boards) Since Germany became a nation in 1871, the country's capital, Berlin, has always reflected its history, both the negative and positive sides. The many ups and downs have made Berlin a city of change.
Most of Berlin was destroyed after the second world war, but many landmarks have either been restored or reconstructed.
After the fall of the wall, historic areas like Potsdamer Platz and Pariser Platz were completely revamped. Nowadays, Berlin is once again one of the greatest European cities: lively, dynamic and inviting. ![[ ]](http://s1.images.proboards.com/off.gif) | Boston, USA (11 sub-boards) Boston is often called the cradle of American History. The city, founded in 1630 is one of America's oldest. It boast a large number of historical landmarks and monuments. The 20th century added a series of skyscrapers to the skyline of church spires.
Many visitors are surprised by the relaxed atmosphere of this cosmopolitan city. Several historic districts including the romantic Beacon Hill and luxurious Back Bay would fit nicely in any European city. The city's skyscrapers in the financial district have less architectural value but add a nice contrast to Boston's older districts. Moderator: Rayne Misericordia | 0 | 0 | |
![[ ]](http://s1.images.proboards.com/off.gif) | Hong Kong, China (1 sub-board) Hong Kong consists of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, Stone Cutter's Island and the New Territories.
In 1841 Hong Kong Island - not much more than 'a barren island with few houses' - was ceded to the British. In 1856 the Chinese also cede Kowloon and Stonecutter's Island. In 1898 the New Territories are leased to the British for a 99-year period. In 1997, at the end of the lease period negotiations between Britain and China resulted in the handover of Hong Kong back to China. Under the credo 'one country, two systems', Hong Kong is now a Special Administrative Region (S.A.R.) of China. ![[ ]](http://s1.images.proboards.com/off.gif) | London, England (1 sub-board) Founded about 2000 years ago by the Romans, Londinium, now called London has a long history. It was already the largest city in Western Europe since 1700, when 575,000 people lived in London. This was largely due to the Industrial revolution, which started in England. London lived its heyday during the Victorian age, when London was also the capital of the huge British empire.

![[ ]](http://s1.images.proboards.com/off.gif) | Madrid, Spain (1 sub-board) This relatively young city was founded by the Moors in 852. It was just another small village until 1561, when King Philips II made Madrid the capital of Spain. The city grew quickly and soon became the largest city in the country. With 3 million inhabitants, it is currently one of the largest cities in Western Europe.
Madrid is home to many attractions, some of the most famous include the Prado Museum and the Royal Palace, the largest palace in Europe. The city also boasts some beautiful plazas such as the large Plaza Mayor or the popular Plaza de España.
Architectural highlights include the Gran Via with many beautiful early 20th century buildings. More recent architecture can be found in Azca, Madrid's modern business district. Moderator: Rayne Misericordia | 1 | 4 | on Jan 13, 2009, 1:25pm by Corvidae Harke in Learning his Violence |

![[ ]](http://s1.images.proboards.com/off.gif) | Paris, France (1 sub-board) Paris, known as the City of Light, is the world's most popular city destination. Paris is the second-largest city in Western Europe, and possibly the city with the most things to see. While there are many must-see places in Paris, make sure when visiting the city you spend at least a day strolling off the beaten path, as this is the only way to discover the real Paris: a lively cosmopolitan but undeniably French city.
The center of Paris is divided in 20 arrondissements in a sort of spiral with the first arrondissement in the middle and the higher numbers on the outer circle. Most of the arrondissements have their own characteristics. The majority of the world known attractions are situated in the first 8 arrondissements. ![[ ]](http://s1.images.proboards.com/off.gif) | Rome, Italy (1 sub-board) No other city in the world equals the history of the Eternal City. Founded more than 2700 years ago, the city of Rome reigned as the Caput Mundi, or Capital of the World.
Monumental buildings like the Pantheon and the Colosseum are reminiscent of the era when emperors like Nero, Trajan and Hadrian ruled the Roman empire.
But today's Rome owes much of its attractiveness to the Renaissance period when new squares like the Campidoglio were developed and new buildings were constructed. The most famous of these buildings is the largest church in the world, the Saint Peter's Basilica.
